Mansion
Mansion is a 2D survival horror adventure developed by the independent Japanese studio Alibi, a small but prolific developer with several titles to its name, including Welcome to Our Western Hotel! and Adventure World – Alisa the Swordsman. While Alibi is no stranger to atmospheric and experimental projects, Mansion leans heavily into minimalist horror design rather than traditional narrative storytelling. Calling the events of Mansion a fully structured “story” may be somewhat generous. The game opens with a brief setup: the protagonist, Sara, finds herself forced to spend the night inside a mysterious mansion alongside her partner, Bruno. Beyond this initial premise, however, the experience quickly abandons conventional plot progression. Instead of a linear narrative with clear motivations and resolutions, the game unfolds as a loosely connected sequence of unsettling encounters, environmental hazards, and survival-focused challenges. The mansion itself takes center stage, acting less as a backdrop and more as the primary source of tension. Players navigate its rooms with limited context, uncovering fragments of atmosphere rather than exposition. This fragmented structure creates a sense of unease and unpredictability, emphasizing isolation and vulnerability over dialogue or character development. Rather than explaining its horrors outright, Mansion relies on player interpretation, leaving much of its meaning ambiguous and open-ended.
